Montgomery’s Sunshine Farm: A Couple’s Labor of Love

Sunshine Farm logoWant to know how a modern farm can operate? Then check out Sunshine Farm at 5800 Jackson Road the next time you’re in Montgomery. The farm is just a few miles from Lake Conroe KOA.

On the 12 acres Jim and Lisa Jenkins bought about 13 years ago sits their home and what they call a labor of love.

The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the couple owns and operates Sunshine Farm, which features goats, chickens, donkeys, plants and a lot of soap.

Jim, a retired Houston police officer, grew up in the city but has been raising animals for more than 20 years. He helped with his grandparent’s farm and said he always wanted to return to the farming lifestyle.

After the two were married, Lisa quit selling insurance and started building a garden.

Although the farm is not certified organic, the family sells only organic foods and “clean” or natural products such as lotions, fragrances and mosquito repellant.

Beginning in March, on the first Saturday of each month, the farm hosts Farm Days, where the family teaches free workshops about how to grow plants, cleaning your home with natural products and how to raise animals such as chickens.

“The goal of our products is to help people clean up what they put on the outside,” Lisa said. “And what they put on the inside.”

The next Farm Day is May 3. The focal topic will be “Harvesting Techniques and Cooking in the Garden.”

Sunshine Farm is now offering wholesale prices to those with the proper tax ID information.

Farm hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; Sunday by appointment only; closed Monday.
