Montgomery’s Unique Wolf Sanctuary

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary logoA popular attraction in Montgomery is the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary, located at 2757 Saint Beulah Chapel Road, three miles west of Montgomery off Highway 105. The sanctuary was voted No. 1 Montgomery attraction by TripAdvisor.

The sanctuary is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity run by volunteers and created to provide a permanent home for non-releasable wolves and wolf dogs to live out the rest of their natural lives safely and comfortably with loving care and attention. The organization is also committed to educating the public about wolves and about the complexities of wolf dog ownership.

At present, the sanctuary is home to 14 wolves, including one named “KOA” in honor of Lake Conroe KOA, which sponsors the lovable creature. KOA’s estimated year of birth is 2002. He likes burying bones, eating treats, taking baths and entertaining guests. KOA teaches us about love, the sanctuary’s website notes. Texas History Comes Alive near Lake Conroe KOA

Texas flagsBooming cannons, dramatic Texas Independence battle re-enactments, a Texian Army Tent Encampment and Native American dancers are among the highlights planned for the Texian Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19, in Montgomery.

This event will be staged at Fernland Historical Park, located just down Highway 105 from Lake Conroe KOA.

Montgomery is a logical place for this inaugural event as it is the birthplace of the Lone Star flag.

From everyday Civil War era dresses of Texas women to the most elaborate of uniforms and antebellum dresses and dozens of pioneer activities, the festival will piece together native history, explore the daily lives of early settlers on the frontier and capture a glimpse of the living history and culture of Texas during the 1800s. Other events include fun for kids of all ages, Frontier Children’s Activities, Shoot-Outs, Dutch Oven Cooking and a Chili Cook-Off.

These pioneer-themed events will be featured from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Lobsterfest 2013!

Lobsterfest 2013 logoOne of the dining highlights of the year at Lake Conroe occurs Thursday, Oct. 10, at the annual Lobsterfest sponsored by the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce.

This event will be held at the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The meal features lobster, steak and beer. Live and silent auctions will be held in conjunction with the event.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour and a silent auction, followed by dinner at 7:30 and a live auction starting at 8 p.m.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic Oct. 4-6

Some campsites remain for the upcoming weekend, which is special at Lake Conroe KOA.

The Toyota Texas Bass Classic will be held on Lake Conroe that weekend, bringing together 50 of the world’s best anglers for the world championship of professional bass fishing. Many of the top fishermen will stay at our park.

The three-day tournament combines the top finishers in the Angler of the Year points races from all three major tours including the Walmart FLW Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series and Bass Pro Shops PAA Tournament Series. Daily tournament weigh-ins, outdoor expos and FREE concerts will be at the Lone Star Convention and Expo Center in Conroe.
